Cultural Competence in Health Care
Given the increasing cultural diversity present in our patient population, it is important to understand how to best tailor the delivery of health care services to individuals from different cultures. It is also important to understand how culturally competent care can lead to better patient outcomes. Through case examples participants will learn to better understand the issues and challenges involved in treating patients from diverse backgrounds. Participants will also gain a greater understanding of their own personal comfort level of treating a diverse patient population.
Objectives
- Define culturally competent health care.
- Understand the forces that are influencing the move towards providing culturally competent care in the United States.
- Examine the various factors which comprise culturally competent care such as pain management, who to involve in developing a plan of care and responses to dying and death.
- Identify opportunities for cultural competence in your health care facility.
